Dryer Repair Tips

!±8± Dryer Repair Tips

You toss your load into the dryer set the timer and walk away. You return to grab your work pants and get ready only to discover the dryer isn't performing like it should. Here's some dryer repair tips to help you get your dryer working again.

If it isn't working at all there are a few things you can try.

1. No Power

Make sure that the power cord is plugged in. Unplug and plug it back in. Check the breakers to make sure it hasn't tripped or that a fuse is not blown. You can also use a volt meter to check the plug itself to make sure there is power going to the plug.

2. Door Switch

In the door is a switch or sensor that when you close the door it presses against a lever which then activates a door switch which allows the dryer to start up. If that lever becomes broken the switch can't activate and then the dryer can't start. You may need to replace this lever.

3. Thermal Fuse

Almost every dryer on the market has a thermal fuse. This fuse will burn out if the dryer overheats. When this happens one of two things occur. The dryer either completely stops working or it runs but it doesn't throw any heat. You will usually find this fuse under the vent duck inside the dryer. If the fuse is blown you will want to replace it.

4. Defective Timers

Occasionally the timer on a dryer can be defective so that even if you have turned the dryer on it doesn't recognize the motion and thus the dryer doesn't start.

If there is no heat there are a few things you can try.

1. Gas Valve Coils

If the igniter glows but then shuts off before it ignites the gas chances are the problem is a coil that is defective. Replace all of the coils - there are usually at least a couple and sometimes more. It is also possible that the gas valve itself needs to be replaced.

2. Thermal Fuse

If the dryer overheats the thermal fuse will burn out with means your dryer will either not run at all or it will run but not throw any heat. Look on the vent duct inside the dryer - this is where you will normally find the fuse. Replace it.

3. Igniter

The igniter can be defective or because it is so fragile it can easily become broken. You should never touch the igniter except for the ceramic part.

4. Flame Sensor

This sensor is near the igniter and you will need to replace it if it is defective or worn out.

If your dryer blows heat but takes far too long to dry the clothing there are a few things you can check.

1. Vents

Check the vent hose and vent itself to make sure there are no clogs. Lint accumulates inside the dryer and if you don't clean out the dryer regularly it lands up in the vent pipe itself which reduces the efficiency of the dryer and increases the fire risk.

2. Thermostat

A dryer has a thermostat that regulates the heating cycles and this thermostat can burn out over time or it can be defective. It's very easy to replace and should be readily available.

If you are a home handyman these dryer repair tips are a great place to start. If that doesn't work perhaps it's time to call a repairman. But why not try to save a few dollars first?

15 Laundry Tips to Make Your Clothes Last Longer

!±8± 15 Laundry Tips to Make Your Clothes Last Longer

Buying new clothes is fun. Seeing your new clothes fray in just a few weeks isn't fun. This happens when clothes are made poorly or laundered improperly. I'm a grandmother and have been doing laundry for decades. These laundry tips keep my clothes looking new and should do the same for you.

1. Sort clothes into whites, darks, and natural/synthetic fibers. Sorting laundry is an old idea, but it's a good idea. If you don't sort your clothes they start to look gray.

2. Pretreat spots with dish soap. Don't spend money on expensive spot removers because dish soap works just as well. Squeeze a few drops on the spot and rub vigorously under cold, running water.

3. Brush stubborn stains with dish soap and an old tooth brush or nail brush. Don't brush too hard, though, or you may damage the fabric.

4. Turn slacks and jeans inside out to prevent fraying. You will want to do this if you bought designer jeans and paid a designer price. I wash my jeans in cold water.

5. Close and lock all zippers. Open zippers damage other clothes and may even damage the inside of your washing machine.

6. Make sure all pockets are empty. Colored paper and receipts can permanently dye other clothes in the washer.

7. Don't overload your machine. When you overload the washer the items rub against each other more and cause fraying. It's better to do two medium loads than one huge load.

8. Use less soap. According to my repair man, "The directions are there to sell soap. You need only a third of that amount. Too much soap will damage your washing machine."

9. Dissolve dry bleach in warm water before using. Add the bleach to your washing machine as it is filling.

10. Use the gentle cycle. Modern washing machines agitate more than the old ones and the regular cycle can "sandpaper" your clothes.

11. Air dry laundry to lower power bills and prolong the life of your clothes. Hang blouses, shirts, and t-shirts on plastic hangers. Tug on the sleeves and hems to smooth out wrinkles.

12. Forgo dryer sheets. The long-term use of dryer sheets (which kite the cost of doing laundry) has caused dermatitis in some people.

13. Toss a dry hand towel in with wet clothes to cut drying time.

14. Remove perma-press items from the dryer immediately. If you fail to do this, toss a damp wash cloth in the dryer and set the dryer for another five minutes.

15. Fold your clothes immediately and put them away.

Do you have college-age kids? Print out this list and give it to them. Knowing how to do laundry is a practical skill that pays off.

To Dust a Room - Keeping Up With the Dust Bunnies

!±8± To Dust a Room - Keeping Up With the Dust Bunnies

You don’t hear much talk about dusting these days. With vacuums and sealed in homes you would think there is no need to dust anymore.

But the opposite is true. We still need to dust. To ward off allergies and just for healthy living in general.

I won’t go into the particular details of the kind of the dirt we bring in from the outdoors, the fibers from clothing and carpeting, and other unmentionable dust sources but chances are if you haven’t dusted in a while you need to. Just trust me on this.

Dust can aggravate and bring on allergies. Keeping it at bay keeps you healthier and reduces allergy symptoms. Don't just knock it down, get rid of it completely.

So how often should you dust?

Well each room that you use regularly should get a regular dusting of surfaces at least once a week.

Rooms with carpeting that get a lot of daily use should be vacuumed daily. Items that have filters should have the filters cleaned or replaced regularly.

This means your heating and air conditioning systems, vacuums with filter bags, clothes dryers etc.

How should you go about dusting?

1. Use a duster get upper corners and the tops of windows and doors.

2. Use a duster to knock the dust bunnies off of walls.

3. Use a dust rag (dampened) to wipe dust off off furniture, lamps and such.

4. Use a duster to get around knick knacks and books on shelves.

5. Vacuum after you dust.

6. Once a month remove the knick knacks, dust them with a damp cloth. Do the same to the the shelf fully to keep dust bunnies at bay.

I also use a furniture cream about once a month. It adds a nice scent to the home and conditions the wood (or so it says).

Frugal dusting tip: Reuse an old fabric dryer sheet by damping it slightly and using it to pick up that bathroom dust such as hair and towel fibers.

Dusting is not passe. So keep it up. It does make a difference.

Small Portable Clothes Washers

!±8± Small Portable Clothes Washers

Small portable clothes washers are becoming an important item of small space living. They are easy to store, easy to move around, as well as being particularly effective at getting a small load of laundry clean. One of the best small portable clothes washers around is the pressure washer that weighs just 4lbs and measures just 17 inches high by 12 inches wide. It operates particularly effectively if you don't cram it full; ideally no more than 5 shirts or just 1 pair of jeans at a time. However, small though it is, the clothes come out clean at the end, and that is the main thing.

The Lemair Top Loader

The Lemair top loader washing machine weighs just 17.5kg, with a 2.5 liter drum capacity. It runs on mains electricity although, as with other small portable clothes washers, it is suitable for motor homes, camping and RVs with electric hookup and has the capacity to operate efficiently with a DC battery that incorporates a 300 watt sine wave inverter. The Lemair will take a 2.2kg laundry load, with a choice of three programs: ordinary, dirty and dirtiest. The cycle to clean the heaviest soiling takes approximately 45 minutes and, for such a small portable clothes washer, this little machine is particularly efficient.

The newest model of Lemair small portable clothes washers is 1100mm high when the lid is open, or 695mm with the lid down. It will fit into a space just 438mm wide and 438mm deep. The whole machine weighs just 18kg. This may be one of the small portable clothes washers but this does not detract from its efficiency. The Lemair has an integral spin cycle, operating at 800rpm, on 240V at 5 hz and even incorporates an alarm to notify you when the washing cycle has finished.

Dometic Space Saver Washing Machine

Yes, I do mean 'Dometic' - that is the name attributed to this small portable clothes washer, slightly heavier than the Lemair, at 54kg. This washing machine is a front-loader with the capacity for washing a 3kg laundry load in its stainless steel drum. The Dometic model includes a range of wash and spin cycles, completing a full washing cycle in approximately 90 minutes. This small portable clothes washer does need to be vented outside although it is ideal to be used in an RV.

Summary

Whilst the Lemair and the Dometic are debatably the 'Rolls Royce' of small portable washers, there are a number of others on the market that work fairly efficiently, some more robust than others. The all provide a clean wash at the end of the laundry cycle so they certainly fulfill their functions. The end choice remains with the customer, however, because at the end of the day, the choice of which of the small portable clothes washers is most suitable is completely subjective, determined by individual preferences and circumstances, as well as the price you are prepared to pay.
